The Food Emporium

The Food Emporium was a chain of grocery stores in the New York City metropolitan area. Founded in 1919 as Daitch Crystal Dairies,〔http://www.company-histories.com/The-Food-Emporium-Company-History.html〕 it is one of six "banner store chains" owned and operated by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, which acquired the The Food Emporium's former parent, Shopwell, Inc., in 1986.
The Food Emporium operates 11 stores in Manhattan and operated 1 store in New Canaan CT until that store closed on October 17, 2015, and reopened on the 21st as an ACME. The other stores have been sold to various grocers such as Key Food and Morton Williams and will close by the end of November 2015. The Manhattan stores were converted from A&P banner when the latter re-branded its NYC stores as The Food Emporium (or Waldbaum's). Key Foods has recently purchased the intellectual rights to the Food Emporium brand name and its property.
